  • In Defense of Whitney

So, everybody hates this new show Whitney, starring the omnipresent Whitney Cummings. Well, I like it. I liked the energy. I like Whitney. She’s pretty, bold and she has a neat physicality. I understand that TV has become increasingly a writer’s medium and, for the most part, I think that has been a fantastic development. That said, I think there’s still room for a sitcom that’s tone is driven by the sensibility of one person- the star. A lot of people think of the 90’s sitcom era as this manic time when people were just throwing comedians against the screens of our televisions to see which one’s would stick. I’m sure a lot of that’s true, but I think it also provided some shows where the appeal was more esoteric. It’s not about single-camera tricks or plot twists or love stories, it was about how this one person was funny and let’s watch them do that. Sometimes, that’s what I want. I don’t need Whitney’s presence on my TV to be labored with tons of logic and situation and STORY. I just want her to be funny. I think she’s doing that. And, I dig the supporting cast. Chris D’Elia is freaking fantastic and if Zoe Lister-Jones has a bigger fan than me, I’ll find them. Afterward, I will be her biggest fan. And, the blond girl with the husky voice? I know I’m going to love her. Sure, there’s that one pilot guy who seems like a bit of a douche, but that’s sort of interesting to me. They’re in their 30’s. I think a lot of groups of friends have evolved and eventually there’s one person in the group that, well, you really just don’t like anymore. But, like my vet said when I was 16 and my cat Tigger had a stroke, “We don’t put Great Aunt Millie to sleep just because she had a stroke.”

Anyway, I’m giving Whitney and Whitney a chance. And, I hope she falls down in every episode. Sue me.
